“Education is the Key to success”
In 2010, Marion Metal Center (MMC) began to focus a majority of its financial assistance on Marion Community Schools. As the largest employer in the Marion Community, MMC felt that it could positively influence the education system.
Dr. Steven Edwards was hired in 2010 as the new administrator of Marion Community Schools. He brought new ideas and a fresh attitude and resolve to the community. He began by making improvements in the teacher’s union and emphasizing Advance Placement studies.
MMC worked with Plant City Grants (PCG) to create the GM Foundation for Educational Excellence at the community foundation. This fund supports programs and practices that positively impact the quality of education at Marion Community Schools. In addition to the initial $10,000 PCG allocation, other individuals and organizations may donate money to the fund. The first award was used to purchase Advanced Placement Study Guides for students in the 2012-2013 school year.
MMC is also working to attract and retain local talent. It is partnering with Marion High School to identify graduates who are now in local colleges that have demonstrated proficiency in the STEM curriculum. MMC will search among these students for suitable candidates for summer interns and possible post-college employment at the plant.
