This fund was established to support Grant County quality of life issues through the Community Foundation Distribution Committee.
The McHarry Family Acorn Fund was created on October 2, 2017. The McHarry Family made consist donations to the fund every month, and just two years later, with the help of the Lilly Match, the fund reached a balance of over $5,000 and was renamed the McHarry Family Fund as a Give to Grant endowment fund at the Community Foundation.
Valerie McHarry felt motivated through her commitment as a board member with the Community Foundation to establish a Give to Grant fund that will forever support worthy charitable causes in Grant County.
She thought an Acorn Fund was an excellent way to start a fund in their family’s name. Many donors choose Acorn Funds as a way to build their fund to an endowment. An initial gift of $100 is necessary to “seed” an acorn fund, and grantmaking can begin immediately once an Acorn Fund balance grows to the endowment fund minimum of $5,000.
The McHarry family did not have a specific purpose for the fund. Once Valerie heard how there was a need for unrestricted funds to be grouped to allow for larger donations for big purpose community needs, she wanted her family fund to be a part of that. So, the fund purpose was set to support Grant County’s quality of life issues through the Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee, also known as a Give to Grant fund. Valerie said she is “excited to see this fund continue to grow and where the funds end up going in the future.”
Additionally, this fund is a part of the Give To Grant Collaborative. These funds serve the Community Foundation mission which is to connect people, resources, and causes to promote a sustainable impact for the betterment of Grant County. The Collaborative, allows our Board to combine generous donations with others’ and pool our resources to do something strong and impactful for our community. This is philanthropy in its broadest sense!
